The Sooners are starting his backup, Austin Kendall, against Baylor this afternoon.Murray, a Heisman Trophy candidate, is being punished by head coach Lincoln Riley. This is not believed to be a serious situation, but he did enough to earn an early benching against the Bears today. Why is Murray being benched to start the game? Here’s everything we know.Rumors were swirling this morning of Murray’s potential benching, with most attributing this to a possible late arrival at practice.Dean Blevins, an Oklahoma reporter for a TV station in the state, tweeted the following:“Lotta rumors that QB Murray suspended. My sources indicate nothing major … but possibly would not start v Bay for minor violation — possibly something like late to practice. Nothing serious long term, as some suggested. Nothing confirmed.”An Oklahoma insider for 247Sports, meanwhile, said the issue is “no big deal.”From his report:“It’s basically (Lincoln) Riley and the OU staff making sure Murray understands that he abides by the same rules as the rest of the team, despite being a millionaire,” he wrote late Friday. “It’s not something that has been a repeated issue, so OU was merely nipping it in the bud before it potentially got out of hand. Punishment looks like it will be handled and OU will still have Murray tomorrow. End of story.”Murray will be missed by Oklahoma, but it doesn’t seem like the star quarterback is going to be out for too long.ESPN had more on the Murray situation:There’s been speculation since Friday that Murray wouldn’t start for unknown reasons, but Oklahoma has yet to confirm. It’s also unclear how long Kendall will play after starting the game.Murray has completed 68 percent of his passes this season for 1,028 yards and 11 touchdowns. He’s rushed for another three touchdowns.Murray’s QBR (95.4) is second nationally, trailing only Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa.Kendall, a sophomore, completed 8 of 10 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown in the Sooners’ opening 63-14 win against Florida Atlantic, but hasn’t seen action since. The dual-threat quarterback has been brilliant so far this season, throwing for 1,028 yards and 11 touchdowns with a completion percentage close to 70 percent.Murray, obviously, is replacing a program legend in Baker Mayfield, but he’s done such an incredible job that he’s already drawing comparisons to the Heisman Trophy winner.News of Murray’s benching was actually first reported by Austin Kendall’s mother, who announced that her son was starting in a tweet. She has since made her Twitter account private.Oklahoma and Baylor are set to kick off at 3:30 p.m. E.T. The game will be televised on ABC.last_img
