He guided the Sooners to the College Football Playoff, and very nearly a national championship appearance, losing a dramatic Rose Bowl semifinal to Georgia.Things may get tougher, as Baker Mayfield is off in the NFL this year. Oklahoma breaks in new quarterback Kyler Murray for a year, before he starts his baseball career.Still, most of the worries that Riley, who turns 35 around the start of the year, wouldn’t be able to effectively steer the ship in a post-Bob Stoops world should be gone.Today, Oklahoma made a big commitment to Riley, extending his contract and bumping his pay up to $4.8 million for next season.Way #Sooners coach Lincoln Riley contract will work?Year 1 – $4.8 millionYear 2 – $4.9 millionYear 3 – $5 millionYear 4 – $5.1 millionYear 5 – $5.2 millionFive years, $25 million.— Bob Przybylo (@BPrzybylo) June 19, 2018Last season, Riley made $3.1 million in his first season as head coach. He was also paid $380,000 in performance bonuses.According to USA Today‘s coaching salary database, this new contract would make Lincoln Riley the 11th-highest paid coach in the country, per last year’s numbers. At $4.8 million, Riley vaults just ahead of Gus Malzahn’s 2017 pay, per the database. Of course, some of the guys ahead of him, like Jimbo Fisher who got a massive deal at Texas A&M, and former Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin, are in new spots.Other extensions make it hard to know exactly where Riley will rank for the 2018 season. It is a fair estimate that he will be floating just outside the top 10, which is pretty good for a coach entering his second year at the head of a program. It also should be noted that Riley is once again the highest paid member of the Oklahoma football program. Murray briefly held that spot, with a signing bonus from the Oakland A’s that came in just shy of $4.66 million. The new contract comes almost exactly a year after he received his first head coaching deal from the Sooners. The school would be smart to keep him happy as well. The NFL is reportedly interested in Riley as a coach.last_img
