FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – If game one was any indication as to what may be in store between the Fort St. John Huskies and Sexsmith Vipers it should be a solid opening round series. With the Huskies out in front with a 3-1 lead in the third period the Vipers fought their way back to tie the game only to have Fort St. John win in overtime last night.Fresh off being recognized as the team’s MVP on Sunday, Cayle Bell came up big again for the pups. Aside from getting the insurance goal in the third, he scored the game winner from between the face off circles on the power play in the extra frame.Plaguing the Huskies throughout the contest were penalty troubles but they were bailed out by the PK. Regardless of the success killing off the penalties assistant coach Todd Alexander said his squad can’t continue putting themselves shorthanded.- Advertisement -“That’s a huge part of the game. [The] PK did a pretty good job all night. They ended up one for five on their side of things. Their power play was sharp. They could have buried a couple of more chances. Our goalie was big in net and held the fort and we had some key blocked shots towards the end otherwise that game could have gotten away on us pretty easy,” he said.Despite Sexsmith coming out on the short end of things in the series opener, Alexander felt the Vipers played a better game as they were able to do a lot of the little things right in the contest.“Sexsmith played well and to be honest I think they were probably the better team overall. They had a little bit better energy, a little bit more jump. They beat us to a lot of loose pucks but we just found a way,” he said.Advertisementlast_img
