The pre-booking for “India ka phone” aka JioPhone starts today at 5:30pm. Update: No, it seems that the pre-booking is starting from 6PM. Earlier Reliance said that it was 5pm but apparently the correct time is 5.30PM. This is when the pre-booking for the JioPhone will open on the Jio website, inside the MyJio app and at the authorised offline stores. The JioPhone, which is effectively free but more on this later, was announced by Mukesh Ambani at the company’s 40th annual general meet held on July 21 in Mumbai.Update: There seems to be great rush to the Jio website for the JioPhone and that has crashed the website. It is either not opening for most people or it is opening very slow. But even when it is opening, the link for JioPhone pre-booking is not working in most instances. Worse, the situation is same with the MyJio app. That too is very very slow and is either not opening or crashing. Consumers can pre-book JioPhone through the website, MyJio app and from offline retailers associated with Jio. As the JioPhone goes on pre-booking — and effectively on sale today — Jio is also answering a lot of questions that people have around the phone’s specification. The JioPhone specifications have been finally revealed along with its key features. The launch event saw not only the announcement but also a demo of what the JioPhone could be like and what all features it will come with. We even saw Isha Ambani along with Akash Ambani and Kiran Thomas giving us a demo of how the JioPhone operates on voice commands for sending text messages, making calls and even for playing music. Isha Ambani also detailed about the features of the phone. Though the trio spoke a lot about the JioPhone, not all details were revealed. For example, the full specifications were not showed.advertisementWith the pre-bookings starting today, Jio has updated its official website and given us the final picture of the much-hyped JioPhone.JioPhone specsFirst this first, and this is something we confirmed earlier as well, the JioPhone is going to be a single SIM phone. This is in contrary to all the previous rumours that predicted the JioPhone would come with dual SIM support. The phone comes with single nanoSIM slot. The JioPhone sports a 2.4-inch QWVGA (240×320 pixels) display and is powered by a 1.2GHz Spreadtrum SPRD 9820A/QC8905 dual-core processor with Mali-400 GPU and 512MB of RAM. The spec sheet reveals that the phone runs on KAI OS. The device is backed by a 2000mAh removable battery which as per company claims offers 12 hours of talk time and 15 days of standby time. The phone comes with 4GB internal storage that’s expandable up to 128GB via microSD card. In terms of optics, the JioPhone features a 2MP rear camera at the back and a VGA camera on the front.Further the phone has an alphanumeric keypad with 4 way navigation keys, Torchlight, USB 2.0 support, WiFi, NFC, FM Radio, and Bluetooth. The JioPhone comes only in Black colour. The box will contain the handset, battery, SIM card, charger adaptor, warranty card and quick service guide. As far as the specifications are concerned, there is nothing earth-shattering here. The JioPhone is a very inexpensive device and its hardware too shows the same. But then this is also a free phone, will offer free voice calls (with a cheap monthly plan) and offers some smartphone like features such as basic web browsing and access to apps like JioTV.How to pre-book JioPhone? Now that the specs details are out of the way, the question comes “how to book the JioPhone”? The JioPhone pre-booking can be done both offline and online channels. To book online, you can either visit the company’s website Jio.com or download the MyJio app. The company has a dedicated page for the pre-booking which goes live today at 5:30pm.Also Read: JioPhone pre-booking starts today: When and how to book, Rs 500 security fee & all questions answeredIt is important to note that when you book the JioPhone today, you will have to pay Rs 500. As for why, we explain it below. For those willing to book offline, you can visit a nearby Jio Store, Reliance Digital store or any multi-retail store to book your JioPhone. Please note that not all Reliance Digital stores will take the registrations for the phone. Only those retailers who have purchased the Jio pre-booking vouchers are eligible to take the pre-bookings. It is advisable to carry your Aadhaar card along with you.advertisementThe JioPhone will be distributed on a first come first serve basis to only those who pre-book the phone starting today.JioPhone is effectively free then why Rs 500 for pre-booking?Jio in a statement released to the media has said that buyer needs to pay Rs 500 to pre-book the phone. This amount will be adjusted in the security deposit of Rs 1500 which is refundable after 3 years. The rest Rs 1000 needs to be paid at the time of the delivery of the device. Jio says that it is taking Rs 500 against every JioPhone booking to avoid ‘potential misuse’.In our opinion, asking users to pay Rs 500 is a welcome move from Jio. This will ensure that only the people who want the JioPhone will book it. So, there are no needless queues, similar to what we saw with the Jio SIM card last year because that was free. This time around, people will go to a Jio store to get the device only if they are serious about it because it entails paying Rs 500.
