10 things to know about Sumner County football going into week #2…

first_img5. Weird schedulingOxford plays Udall not once, but twice this season. Oxford hosts Udall in week #3 before traveling to Udall in week #9. 3. What else was significant about that game?Oxford beat South Haven for the very first time in eight-man football. The Wildcats have been playing eight-man football for six years going and it seems every time they got things rolling in the positive direction, a game with South Haven would loom and ruin all momentum. It appeared early Friday that things might have changed after Oxford scored four touchdowns in the first quarter. 9. Caldwell at Udall…The Bluejays pulled out a close one against Central-Burden winning 8-6. This game will be a tough one. The Eagles annihilated Norwich 56-6 in week one. Close Forgot password? So what is the schedule for week #2? 7. Conway Springs stays focused…Conway Springs drilled Bluestem 55-14 in the season opener and it was 28-0 at halftime. Granted that is a shellacking. But when it comes to shellackings, this one wasn’t the Cardinals’ biggest against Bluestem teams in years past. The reason? Some observers said Bluestem is looking much better. The Lions actually ran more offensive plays than the Cardinals: 49 to 47. Granted a lot of it was during garbage time and that tends to happen when Conway Springs is averaging 9.5 yards per play. But Bluestem also accumulated 242 yards and 11 first downs, including a 79 yard run from a back named Lane Moran in the fourth quarter. Does this mean anything? Probably not. Conway Springs is heavily favored when it travels to Medicine Lodge Friday. But for Bluestem, who has played some of the worst football in years for so long, the Conway Springs game may be promising. 6. Still looking for win…A coach will tell you that there is no such thing as a moral victory. However, Belle Plaine’s 15-9 loss to Medicine Lodge is close to a moral victory, considering it was much more lopsided in 2013. This will be a tough weekend for Belle Plaine which travels to Garden Plain. The Owls will be looking for a win after losing to Cheney 35-21. Belle Plaine at Garden Plain Caldwell at Udall 8. Sedan at South Haven…Sedan whipped Elk Valley 66-0, while South Haven lost to Oxford 72-38. This will mark the second home game for South Haven, which would like to get a win before taking to the road. 10. Cedar Vale-Dexter at Argonia-Attica…Just to put this in perspective. This game involves four different Kansas towns. Yes, rural America’s population is shrinking.Follow us on Twitter. 2. Anything unusual from week #1? Daeyln HaskinsHow about this stat: Oxford’s Daelyn Haskins had seven touchdowns including two of those on kickoff/punt returns in the Wildcats 78-42 win over South Haven in the season opener.Haskins may have broken a school record with his seven touchdowns in one game, Oxford head coach Shawn Burkes said. His kickoff return for a touchdown tied the state record in eight-man football. He has eight of them over his career. And the season has just begun… 4. So who does Oxford play this week? Well, maybe its the word “South” that is giving Oxford such a hard time. South Barber will come to Oxford as the prohibitive favorite this Friday for the Wildcat opener.Pratt Skyline did beat the Chieftains 48-32 last week, but Skyline is a powerhouse in 8-man D1 and South Barber is still ranked No. 5 in the latest eight-man division II poll. Make no mistake, though. A win over South Barber this weekend and Oxford will be turning heads across the state of Kansas.last_img read more
